How Long Should It Take To Get Headshots Back From A Photographer After A Photo Shoot

It often takes longer than you think it should to get your photos back after a photography session.  The reason for this is because there’s a lot of work the photographer must do to your photos before they are ready for a client.

For headshots, use these timelines as a rule of thumb:

Proofs: 1-2 business days

Retouched headshots: 1-2 weeks

It’s easy to think that the turnaround should only be a day or two.  “Hey, why can’t the photographer just upload the pictures to his or her computer and deliver them?”

Well, it’s not so simple.  First, the files must be uploaded from a memory card and imported into a file management program such as Lightroom.  Unless the computer is very fast, this process alone can be slow.  Once imported, photos must be culled. After culling the photos must be exported as proofs and uploaded to a proofing website.  Once the client has made their selections, the images must be imported into Photoshop to be retouched.  Retouching for headshots can take anywhere from 10-60 minutes per image.  Photographers are not robots, and must take regular breaks between retouching images. After all the images are retouching and imported back into Lightroom for final adjustment, cropping, and exporting.  The files must once again be uploaded and delivered to the client.

While this may still seems like a straightforward process, and it usually is, keep in mind that your friendly photographer is wearing many hats in the work they do to be a professional photographer.  They are the photographer, the retoucher, the marketer, the studio manager, the accountant, the producer, and the client coordinator.  The lifestyle is taxing.  The more clients a photographer takes on, the more each of those areas of the photographer’s business get stretched.

So the next time it’s been a week or two since your photo shoot, and you still haven’t seen your finished photos, understand that your photographer is doing doing a lot behind the scenes.

Modern Headshots For A Hip Hospitality Company

Shooting headshots for large groups of people can be a logistical challenge. A technology company contacted us to photograph their headshots for fifty employees assembled for their annual conference at the Marriott Hotel in Southlake, TX, and a conference room was rented for the Caprock Studio team to set up our lights and backdrop— a defacto studio. Throughout a day of talks and classes for the employees, we found time for each person as they became available in between events to come into our ‘studio’ for a quick 5 minute session.

When we were initially commissioned to photograph headshots of their team, the client expressed a desire to have us photograph their employees in the style of a tech startup— fresh, modern, organic. Although the client is a large multinational technology company, the creative director in charge of the hospitality branch— a much smaller division of the overall company—wanted the headshots to be warm and approachable, but also have a creative edge to the photos.

In order to achieve the look the client desired, we settled on a dark gray seamless backdrop, and backlit the subjects with stronger edge lighting than we normally would. The key light was a medium octabox, camera right, tilted back towards the camera to add that nice soft wrapping light on the subject’s face. We also used a silver reflector to add a punchy fill to the photos. The result was human and approachable, but with fresh contemporary lighting to add dynamic excitement to the finished product.

The day was a success and the pictures came out beautifully. The client was thrilled with what we were able to capture.

Meet Jessica

We are thrilled to announce the addition of our new Studio Manager, Jessica Sherrell.  Jessica comes from a background in production and is a photographer in her own right.  Her duties will include client relations and management of the day-to-day studio operations.

How did you get into photography?

My father owned a photography and video studio growing up.  I suppose I’m following in his footsteps.

What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever seen on a photo shoot?

A bride crumbling to the ground and getting soaked in mud when they played the wrong song when she walked down the isle.  It was an outdoor wedding on a farm and it had started to rain so the ground turned to mud.   I will say it ended up being a very fun crazy wedding.

If you were stranded on a desert island, what camera would you take with you?

A Holga, that’s easy.  It’s a medium format film camera.  It’s plastic, it’s light, and produces dreamy photographs.

UNT Headshot Day 2016

This Sunday we set up a ‘headshot day’ for a bunch of grad student friends at UNT.  Eleven people came out, most of them writers, to enjoy a fun day of headshot taking, taco eating, beer drinking, and general merriment. When the day was over I had over 2000 images and a memory card full of fantastic headshots.

We started the day at 10:30am, and it was chilly.  And breezy.  We made it work, however, and got some lovely shots on the porch of Oak St. Drafthouse. At the beginning I was using an off camera flash with a 36″ Octabox.  The shots were working, but ultimately I dropped the use of the strobe and went with natural light and reflector after we finished up at Oak St.  Considering we had eleven people to shoot, I just felt it was slowing us down too much, so we switched to the reflector and I was much happier.

We moved down the street to Industrial Ave., shooting mostly outside of Hoochies and Dan’s Silver Leaf.

We ended the day at the very photogenic Harvest House, shooting outside on their back patio,  and inside as at one of the picnic tables by the back windows.  It’s a great location with good light, and funky shipping pallets outside made for a great background.

All said and done the day was a COMPLETE SUCCESS.  Everyone seemed to have a great time (including myself) and the shots came out as well as I had hoped.
